Parents Can Help Shape Up Their Child’s Physical Education:

1. Get involved.  Parents can accomplish so much on behalf of their children by serving on committees to help choose a strong PE curriculum.
2. Become an active volunteer.  Organizing fund-raisers is a tremendous help in providing educators with the tools they need.
3. Press for P.E.  The leading factor in getting children happily involved in physical education is by making it fun and by making it something that everyone can benefit from.
Parents need to ensure that their children are getting the physical education they need from the schools. Parents Can Help Shape Up Their Child’s Physical Education. When parents are involved with their children's school and behavior, increased learning takes place.
For parent involvement programs to be successful, educators must play the key role in the link between home and school. Home activities should build basic physical skills without duplicating the teachers' efforts. We are looking forward to having a great year!!!

It is hard to believe that summer is over and school has started again. I am looking forward to having your child in physical education class this year. In order to have a safe and productive learning environment the school-wide discipline plan will be enforced. In addition students may have a time-out from an activity for misbehavior after the warning.
Grade Policy in elementary physical education is based primarily on three areas: * Participation- Numerous time-out or infractions will affect grades, * Attitude and * Effort.
If there is a time when your child can not participate due to injury or illness please send a note to the school. If longer that 3 days we must have a doctor’s excuse, otherwise it will be considered an unexcused absence. Please make sure that your child brings or wear proper shoes every day.  Also, if your child likes to wear dresses or skirts to school it is very helpful to have them wear shorts underneath.  Physical education not only teaches the psycho-motor domain but the cognitive and affective domains as well.
My goal is to have every student experience success. I do not stress competition but instead I stress that if you do your best then you are a winner. Good sportsmanship and teamwork are very important not only in the gym but in real life situations too. Good sportsmanship is always required in class!

 Parents,
Hello! I am Jeffrey Brooks, physical education teacher. Welcome back to Imagine Andrew Elementary school, home of the Eagles. I am very excited in welcoming your son and/or daughter back for an exciting and safe year to be a part of my Physical Education class!
I look forward to a great year and to helping all of my students grow! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by e-mail at Jeffrey.brooks@pgcps.org or by phone through the school at 301-350-6002.

A key element that contributes to student success and well-being is safety. While in PE class, students need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Clothing should be conducive to movement. My recommendation is for students to wear athletic shoes, however, if your child does not have athletic shoes, it is important that the shoes your child wears has laces or Velcro style straps. It is also important that shoes have a back that goes over their heels and rubber soles are important. If you are not sure, please feel free to contact me and ask. I am happy to answer any questions that you might have.
A day of PE consist of warm ups, a game or other activity, and working on Learning Goals. I have listed some Learning Goals that we will be learning or building on in PE classes. Physical Education is an integral part of your

child’s education and contributes to his/her growth and development. It is my goal to give your child a positive PE experience and to help him/her gain an appreciation of the importance of staying active. Your child will have experiences in individual, team, and group activities that place an emphasis on participation, cooperation, and success through personal goals.
This fall your child can look forward to working on specific Learning Goals (just to name a few):
*K through 2nd grades:
Locomotor movement - walking, galloping, sliding, jumping, hopping, and etc.
Non-locomotor movement – balance, twisting, bridging, bending, and etc.
*3rd and 4th grades:
Locomotor movement- Traveling in a direction of patterns, dodging and fleeing.
Non-locomotor – transfer weight from one body part to another.
*5th through 8th grades:
Continue to develop positive self-image, teamwork and cooperation, socialization, goal setting, problem solving, large and small muscle development, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, understanding of the importance of physical fitness, and promote positive decision-making habits and positive social behaviors.

August, 2016
Dear Parents,
It is with great pleasure that I am introducing myself as your P.E. teacher. My name is Jeffrey Brooks. I graduated from Central State University in Ohio and have a master’s degree in Special Education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona. I am very excited to be here at Imagine Andrew’s, and look forward in meeting and working with you and your child.                              In order for the physical education program to continue being successful, your child needs to be committed to following the safety rules, willing to participate, developing good sportsmanship, and have a positive attitude.

When parents and teachers work together it brings about success for their child. Parents have the primary responsibility in encouraging their children’s physical activity, positive attitudes and behaviors. It is vital for children to develop an interest in physical activity at a young age, since active children are more likely than inactive children to become active adults. Parents can model and encourage healthy behaviors at home by being positive role models, leading an active lifestyle, and making physical activity a fun part of the family’s daily routine. Parents can motivate children to engage in physical activity by allowing time for family activities (walks, playing active games, swimming, hiking, skating and participating in seasonal physical activities etc.) with their children or encouraging participation in community activities.
If your child, for any reason cannot participate in Physical Education activities please send a note. If a medical condition requires non-participation for more than three PE days please obtain a note from the medical provider stating when the student can return to physical education activities.
More information, such as the grading guidelines, discipline procedures and positive reinforcement is forthcoming in my News Flash Blob. If you have any questions please contact me by e-mail at jeffrey.brooks@pgcps.org.  I look forward to another active and fun years at Imagine Andrew!

Respectfully,
 Mr. J. Brooks
